Shelter Support Attendant

JOB TITLE:                         Shelter Support Attendant

FLSA STATUS:                  Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT:                  ERF Program

DIRECT SUPERVISOR:      Shelter Supervisor

POSITIONS MANAGED:    None

SALARY RANGE:               $17-22 per hour

SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Shelter Administrator, the Shelter Support Attendant will help ensure and maintain a clean, safe, and supportive environment for all participants. The Shelter Support Attendant will work with the other shelter staff to help all participants move towards stability and toward achieving their goals. They will be responsible for the Duties and Responsibilities listed below, and perform other duties as assigned.

 

NOTE: Performance reviews are conducted annually upon the anniversary of your hire date. Raises and promotions are based on merit, (job performance, work ethics, attendance, etc.) which will be at the discretion of the Executive and Program Directors. Raises are not guaranteed upon review.

 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in implementing shelter activities to ensure quality and trauma-informed delivery of services.

  • Encourage and discuss progress toward housing with shelter participants.

  • Assist with shelter setup, maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of the facility.

  • Empty trash cans and perform clean-up duties.

  • Assist with receiving and verifying orders from vendors and completing tally sheets.

  • Help organize supplies and address facility needs.

  • Maintain a safe and functional shelter by facilitating curfew and signing participants in and out of the facility.

  • Perform basic searches of persons or their property.

  • Demonstrate responsibility during perimeter checks and fire watch duties.

  • Provide support to drivers.

  • Assist with keeping detailed daily summary sheets.

  • Assist with record-keeping and reporting.

  • Maintain perimeter check logs and safety logs.

  • Assist with participant services and program activities as needed.

  • Knowledge of fair housing laws and legal issues related to client advocacy

  • Ability to prioritize urgent matters and adapt to change.

  • Ability to provide participant-focused, trauma-informed, and housing-focused services.

  • Ability to perform crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed.

  • Ability to work effectively with any contracted staff (e.g., security team, service providers)

  • Ability to direct and professionally control crowds while respecting individual dignity.

  • Any other tasks assigned by the Shelter Administrator.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a high level of patience, tolerance, and understanding for individuals with urgent case
    management and health needs.

  • Reliable transportation is required.

  • Flexible work schedule, including weekends, evenings, and potential schedule changes.

  • Detail-oriented and proficient in Microsoft Office/Google Suite products

  • Self-motivated, able to manage a high volume of emails, and work independently or in a group.

  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal).

  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must be free of alcohol and other drugs daily.

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent qualification preferred.

  • Valid, unrestricted CA driver’s license.

  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) or the
    American Red Cross.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to commute in the field to meet with property managers, conduct inspections, post notices,
    etc.

  • Enter units with program staff as needed.

  • Respond to phone inquiries.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when required.
